It wasn't uncommon for Luke Tavish's younger brother to stay out all night when he'd gone carousing with his friends, but when Will still hadn't returned home late the next evening, they began to get worried. Their great grandmother felt certain he was at the old Somerled ruins, and after Luke found the empty beer bottles and the broken ladder, he was sure too... at least Will had been there, but where was he now?

Two hundred years earlier, a young woman had gone to bed, crying herself to sleep because the only man that seemed interested in her wasn't one she could ever see herself loving. At twenty-three, she knew she should consider his advances. She was already considered too old by society's standards. But Brinna couldn't. Her heart told her there were far worse things than being alone. She'd already resolved to surrender herself to the nunnery the next day, only she'd awakened in the night to find her family home engulfed in flames.

In her plight to save herself, she'd stumbled upon a trio of young boys trying to make their way through the flames. Hand in hand with the youngest, she'd led them to a back staircase and outside to safety where they'd watched the flames consume too many of those they loved. Heartbroken, Brinna had left the children with their mother after she'd looked around and realized there was nothing left for her to do but try to get to the abbey. As she walked, thoughts of the young lad plagued her. She had the feeling that someday she would meet the oddly dressed boy again.
